Question by Jerry R: DIY’ers and pros, I need some opinions on which is the best “pole saw” use.?
I need to cut some high branches on trees around my yard. I have seen the various types of pole saws (the kind that extend out to 20 feet or so). Have you used the regular saw types, and have you used the new type that has a “chain saw” on the end instead of a stationary blade? Which one is best to use for branches that are 10 – 20 feet high and around 2 – 10 inches in diameter?
Any opinions from those who have used either type of saw would be appreciated! Thanks very much

I wouldn’t use an electric pole saw. There is too much of a risk of ‘kick back.’ There is also an increased chance of wrecking your cut as it is so quick.
For a novice pruner, I suggest using a regular hand held pole saw. You can determine the type of cut and you control your cuts better.
The most important thing for your tree is to make a proper cut. I’ve added some information that may be useful for you. Your tree will recover faster and be resistant to disease and insects if you make a proper cut the first time.
For products, I only know of a few that have great quality. Zubat Pole Saw, Hayauchi Pole Saw, Corona pole saws, to name a few.
